Tower at Ampelakia
Remains of a tower in the village Ampelakia of Salamis. It is not known when exactly it was built;sometime between the 13th and the 16th centuries. Most probably, the 13th.
History
After the fall of Constantinople and the beginning of the Frankish occupation in Greece, Salamis became part of the Duchy of Athens.
Guy II De La Roche who was Duke of Athens in the period 1296-1317 gave the island as a fief to the Venetian Boniface Da Verona who was already lord of part of Evia island. Later Salamis passed under the control of the Catalans and the Venetians until the 17th century.
The Franks (or perhaps the Venetians) built 3 towers in Salamis. They were more observatories than defensive constructions. Only the tower in Ampelakia remains today.
The type of construction is similar to other Frankish towers in Attica, so it was probably built in the 13th or 14th century. The Venetians were never very interested in reinforcing their position in Salamis and they would certainly build a stronger tower. Nevertheless, the chronology of the building remains uncertain.
